Plant to Pipeline · Deal cycle
The project that is not yours.
An integration detail that is not a detail
Quality and MES software exchanges data with the ERP, so a buyer convinced by your product still needs to know how it will connect. If the ERP is being replaced or upgraded, that answer may not exist yet.
What it can change
The pace of your deal can end up tied to milestones on a project you do not run, and the team leading it can gain a voice in a purchase they did not start. In some groups, the choice of ERP platform can carry the manufacturing system with it, settling the question for every plant at once.
It can also open the door
An ERP project is not only a reason to wait, because when a company replaces its ERP or retires the older systems around it, it has to rethink how everything connects, and that can be the moment it starts looking at new vendors.
What to ask, and when
Ask three things in the first conversation: which ERP the plant runs, whether a project is underway or planned, and who runs it. None of the answers disqualifies a lead, but together they tell you whose calendar your deal is really on.
